| Uttaranchal is a young
state, barely four years old, having
been carved out of Uttar Pradesh. It has
however several good things going for
it. Levels of literacy in the state are
higher than the national average. The
hills, the large forest cover and the
presence of several holy shrines offer a
tremendous tourist potential.
The paper describes in some detail
the resource base available in the State
and the potential that exists for
development in specific areas; e.g.
development of tourism, IT and biotech
fields, particularly industries based on
herbal and medicinal plants, hydro power
generation etc.
