Government of Maharashtra has formulated its policy in 1996 to finance road development projects through private sector participation. It includes improvements to the existing roads and construction of roads, bridges, ROB’s, tunnels, culverts etc.

In order to complete the road network as per 1981-2001 Road Development Plan, approximately Rs.26000 Crores are required. Road improvements, construction of bridges over them and construction of new expressways, Bypasses etc. cannot be implemented due to paucity of funds with the State Government. The Government of Maharashtra has therefore, decided to implement some of the important road projects through private Sector Participation.

To encourage private sector participation and to give impetus to the efforts of the Government towards privatisation, “Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (Limited)” (M.S.R.D.C.) has been established in 1996. Certain important major works to be taken up through Private Sector Participation are being implemented through this Corporation.
