Introduction

 
Serving as the corridor between the wealthy north and the flourishing west, Rajasthan's strategic location enables convenient access to the two largest consumer markets in India. Rajasthan is emerging as one of the important states in India. The state's GDP grew at a consequential 12.85 per cent between 2002-03 and 2007-08 to reach US$ 34.64 billion. Agriculture accounts for 80 per cent share in the primary sector and has grown at a CAGR of 21 per cent between 2002-03 and 2006-07. Distribution of households by income shows that share of households in higher income categories in Rajasthan is greater than for all-India.

Ranked second in the country in barley production and third in soyabean and gram, the contribution of Rajasthan has been immense in crops like mustard, bajra, guar, cumin, coriander, and rabi oil seeds. Not only this, it stands amongst the largest producers of cotton and wool. It is a mining hub, and has the second largest mineral reserves in the country. Its construction industry has the highest outstanding investments at US$ 9.91 billion, followed by the electricity sector at US$ 7.5 billion.

Tourism accounts for over 15 per cent of Rajasthan's economy. It attracts over 10 per cent of the foreign tourists visiting the country every year. The state is a home to a myriads of forts, palaces and museums, which were part of erstwhile princely states. The state also encompasses tiger sanctuaries and hosts numerous fairs, some of which, like the Pushkar fair, have gained international fame. Rajasthan has a developed tourism infrastructure, with over 6,000 rooms spread over more than 150 hotels. The 'Palace on Wheels', a well known luxury attraction for foreign tourists, runs through this state.
