Introduction

 
Kerala is a beautiful state serving as one of the most sought after tourist attraction destinations. In terms of infrastructure and literacy, the state is leading the country. It is among the most well performing states in India that has succeeded in carving a niche for itself on the industrial front. The state holds significant industrial potential owing to good infrastructure facilities like power, transport system, airports, ports and availability of rare minerals.

The state's GDP has grown at a remarkable level of 10.3 percent from the period between 1999-2000 and 2005-06 and touched US$ 26.44 billion. Its tertiary sector has been growing at a very fast pace and has shown a phenomenal growth. It has grown at a CAGR of 12.6 per cent between 1999-00 and 2005-06, driven by sub-sectors like trade, hotels, transport and communication. Households in the state have higher disposable incomes compared to the rest of the country.

As on March 31, 2008, the outstanding investments in the state totalled US$ 24.86 billion out of which 66 percent is still under implementation. Small scale industries accounts for 40 per cent of industrial production and 35 per cent of exports. There has been a sharp rise in the number of SSI units and has reached to 193,302 with a total investment of US$ 1.3 billion as on march 2006.

The Government of Kerala has drawn up an investment promotion programme named as Kerala Local Industry Promotion Programme (KLIPP) under the banner name of PRATHYA SA through the District Industries Centre to promote SSI.

  • The Literacy rate in Kerala is highest among Indian states at 90.9 per cent as against the all India literacy rate of 65.4 per cent
  • The first state in the country to install public telephones in its census villages
  • Population growth rate is 0.87%
  • Largest producer of coconut, pepper, coir, cocoa, rubber and areca nut in the country.
  • Kochi (Cochin) International Airport Ltd, India’s first private airport was inaugurated in June 1999. It was accorded international airport status in 2000.
